Our team supported our Children’s Village and Rwenjaza Hillside School through sport, painting, planting flowers, teaching lessons and spending quality time with the children and staff. Sport was a big feature of this trip. With several highly sporty members of the team, we ran a series of lessons for the school children including football, cricket, tennis, netball and table tennis. Daily swimming taster sessions were held after school with a different FOP family house participating each day.
Here are some highlights from the team:
"We played loads of football with the kids including shooting practice, dribbling and passing drills where they were able to showcase their skills. Just some simple drills brought such joy to the kids, and it was great to see their God-given talent on show."
“Swimming was my personal favourite. Over nine days we had around fifty children who had never swum. Each session included a few exercises on learning how to kick, hold your breath underwater and correct body position. By the end of the week one child was swimming a width of the pool unassisted which was remarkable.”
“Arguably cricket was the easiest to pick up. The young people rapidly learnt the basic skills of throwing and batting and showcased them in numerous games of diamond cricket. Some of the FOP children could pelt a ball at the stumps with some velocity, which took all the sporting team aback. Both the joy expressed by the children and their skill were particularly striking, especially given their really tough start in life.”
Other members of the team coached the children in table tennis and netball and loved having the opportunity to spend time getting to know the children whilst having a lot of fun!
Education also featured heavily on the trip as we travelled with four teachers. It was a privilege to work alongside the nannies in the pre-school as well as teaching and observing lessons in the primary school. We were reminded of the extremely limited resources available to the teachers and children having witnessed a science lesson where the teacher had the only textbook available. Paula and Katrina, from Harper Green School in Bolton, share their experiences:
“During our time teaching at Rwenjaza Hillside School, we had the opportunity to deliver a range of engaging and meaningful learning experiences. Katrina taught lessons on the parable of the Good Samaritan, encouraging pupils to reflect on kindness, compassion, and helping others, while also supporting the development of their writing skills. As part of an environmental project, Paula led discussions about climate change and God's creation, helping pupils understand the importance of caring for the world around them. Classes P5 and P6 enthusiastically voted for Environmental Ambassadors, who will continue to lead initiatives including water recycling, litter collection, the development of the school garden, and the introduction of new recycling bins around the school.
We also spent time supporting the Day Care Centre at FOP, where we helped younger children enjoy swimming, mark making, sharing books, experiencing sand and water play, and phonics activities. It was an enjoyable and rewarding experience for everyone involved, providing valuable opportunities to learn, support others, and build lasting memories.”
The remaining team formed ‘Team Paint’ and split their time across two of the children’s homes. Building on the redecoration of Spark House, completed by the January 2026 volunteer trip team, it was our privilege to add new murals for the dining room, girls’ and boys’ bedrooms. The designs were selected in collaboration with Peace to reflect the fact the children are growing up. A second family home, Conlon House, was completely redecorated by the team who worked alongside a local decorator, ready for murals to be added in the future.
Mark, a member of the team, said: “It was a privilege to help with redecorating the Conlon House during our visit to Fountain of Peace. The house mother Helen was so patient as we worked through the different rooms in the house and the team had a lot of fun working together, listening to music and occasionally managed to get more paint on the house than we did on ourselves!”
